I do believe fall is knocking on the door and bringing with it cooler temperatures, earlier sunsets, festivals and fall traditions. Rock Star Massage has a new therapist, Sarah, that will begin taking appointments as soon as we receive her license. She brings several years of experience and new modalities, such as manual lymphatic drainage and active release technique. I am very excited to welcome her to the family! Life, otherwise, has been busy with work, football games, and spending time with family. It has been a while since we have talked about meditation and its benefits. There are numerous benefits to meditation, but I would like to focus on my personal top 3 benefits of meditation and will try to convince you to begin a new healthy habit today! These benefits are all back by science. Let’s count them down 3 to 1, and the facts might surprise you.
My number 3 benefit of meditation is that it may reduce age-related memory loss. As you practice meditation, your awareness improves along with your memory and mental clarity. We have discussed in previous posts that your brain needs exercise to stay in top-preforming shape. Any improvement in attention and clear thinking may help to keep your mind young. Mental quickness can improve by incorporating several meditation techniques and styles.
My number 2 benefit of meditation is that it can help improve your sleep. Who else is excited about this benefit? I often struggle with falling asleep and staying asleep when I’m stressed out or experiencing times of high anxiety. Studies show that almost half of people struggle with insomnia at some point. Meditation can help with insomnia by gaining skills to control your racing mind/thoughts. In addition, it can help you to relax, release tension and have a sense of calm as you go to bed, which makes achieving sleep more likely.
My number 1 benefit of meditation is that it helps to reduce stress and anxiety! As I alluded to in benefit number 2, an 8-week study revealed a reduced inflammation response due to stress. Meditation can also reduce symptoms in people with medical conditions that are triggered by stress. By reducing stress, practicing meditation also translates to less anxiety. I used the Calm app when I first began practicing meditation and noticed decreased levels of both stress and anxiety as compared to before I used it. Habitual meditation can help to reduce anxiety and improve stress reactivity and coping skills.
Frankincense essential oil from Young Living is a great oil to use when meditating, as it can increase your spiritual awareness. I find the aroma of frankincense to have a calming and grounding effect on me, but this is just the tip of the iceberg of uses for this amazing oil. If you are interested in experiencing this oil or any of Young Living’s essential oils, contact me to schedule a time to meet. I welcome the opportunity to coach you in your wellness journey by exploring how YL products can enhance this journey!
