Learn to listen to your body and recognize pain.

August 10thd, 2021

How are y’all doing this week? The heat has returned to the Kansas City metro just in time for the return of concerts and football. I have been in a very creative headspace lately, so make sure you are keeping up to date with me on social media as I will be posting a poll later this week. I want your feedback so that I can better serve my community! Continuing our exploration into pain, today we will learn how to listen to our bodies so we can better recognize pain.

We can feel all types of pain, but do we really feel it and recognize it? Stick with me! Let me explain it this way: we can hear somebody talking but this is different than listening. I can feel the pain of a headache, but if I learn to listen to my body, I can tell you that the pain is like a vice squeezing my head concentrated at both temples, radiating down to both sides of my jaw. Doesn’t this create a more complete picture of the pain? This can be helpful when you seek treatment from a massage therapist, chiropractor, or other wellness professional, because it hints at the origin and type of pain. I strive to teach every one of my clients to learn to listen to their body.

Listening to your body is great in theory, but how do you that? I’m so glad you asked! It is a process, but not an overnight process. I would suggest first setting aside 15 minutes today to do the following:

  1. Lay down on the floor, use cushions if needed

  2. Make sure electronics are on silent and in a different room, unless you need to set timer

  3. Remove any distractions from room

  4. Quiet your mind and focus on what you feel: any pain, the texture of the floor, your breath

  5. Make mental notes of any discomfort or pain you feel and then explore that pain. Is it a dull ache, stabbing pain, hot fire poker, tightness/tension?

What did you learn about your body? If you need more help with this exercise, reach out to me and I will schedule a time to help you in your journey.

Whether this is the first time reading my blog, or you are a loyal subscriber, Thank you! I am so glad you tuned in this week! Do you have a friend or family member that could benefit from this blog? Tell them to subscribe!

Have a blessed week ~ Lacey
